Fathers

Home > Fathers

When there’s any mention of anything to do with pregnancy, childbirth or babies, quite understandably the assumption is that we are referring to women. However, just as it takes ‘two to tango’, it also takes a woman and a man to make a baby. An obvious point perhaps, but vastly overlooked when it comes to considering the needs, thoughts and feelings of fathers.

Can you answer ‘yes’ to any of the following?
  • I am struggling with the idea of becoming a father
  • I have experienced the loss of my baby (through termination, miscarriage or still birth)
  • I am supporting my family after a traumatic childbirth
  • I am supporting my partner suffering with antenatal/postnatal reactions (i.e. high stress, anxiety or depression)
  • I have recently been bereaved and my grief is getting in the way of being with my family as I’d like
  • I’m finding my relationship very challenging

Whatever the cause, if you are struggling to manage all that you are trying to hold together you may find you could benefit from talking to an impartial professional.

Individual therapy
Individual therapy gives you space just for you. If you are struggling with difficult emotions and /or stress, allowing yourself the time and space to gain greater awareness and clear unwanted emotions, will in return, carry huge benefits to you and your family.  Often, early intervention is important in order to catch symptoms before they get too ingrained. If you consider your experience to be intense, out of control or ongoing, it would be recommended to seek support.

The length of counselling you will require will wholly depend on your individual needs. Some people only require 1 to 2 sessions and find they have cleared, healed or changed what they came with. Some need longer, in the region of eight to fifteen sessions, whilst others choose to undertake deep long term work (one plus years).
